The science, simply

How red light works

Different wavelengths reach different depths in the skin, where light can interact with cellular processes.

  • Red light · 630–660 nm

Studied for skin appearance and may support smoother-looking skin with regular use. Results vary.

  • Near-infrared · 810–850 nm

Invisible to the eye, it reaches deeper and is studied for its effects on cellular activity.

  • Consistency matters

Follow your device instructions. Outcomes vary with the device, routine and individual.

The research context

Published research explores red and near-infrared light using specific devices and protocols. It does not establish the same results for every home-use device.

A few useful answers

Got a question?

Practical answers to help you choose a device and find your routine.

Ask our UK team
How long should I use red light therapy for?

As a rough guide, many red light devices are used for around 10–15 minutes per session, several times a week. The exact timing depends on the device, so always follow the instructions provided with your product.

How often should I use it?

Consistency matters more than doing long sessions. 3–5 sessions per week is a useful general guide, although some products are designed for more frequent use. Follow your device’s recommended frequency.

How close should I be to the light?

It depends on the device. Wearable devices such as masks and wraps sit directly against or close to the skin, while panels and lamps are generally used at a short distance. Check the product page and supplied instructions for the recommended setup and distance.

When should I expect results?

There is no fixed timeline or guaranteed result. Any changes depend on the device, your routine and individual factors. Follow the supplied instructions, and assess your experience over time. Results vary between individuals.

Which device should I choose?

Start with the area you want to target. Masks are designed for the face, hair devices for the scalp, wraps for targeted body areas, and panels or lamps offer options for larger areas.
